The Syrian Oil Ministry is accusing the United States of stealing most of their country’s oil.
A statement released by the ministry on August 9th said, “The amount of oil production during the first half of 2022 amounted to some 14.5 million barrels, with an average daily production of 80.3 thousand barrels, of which 14.2 thousand are delivered daily to refineries.”
They allege that “US occupation forces and their mercenaries” (American-backed Syrian Democratic Forces) “steal up to 66,000 barrels every single day from the fields occupied in the eastern region.” If the claims are true, that would equal approximately 83% of Syrian oil being taken each day.
The theft has resulted in major losses for the Syrian oil sector – “about 105 billion dollars since the beginning of the war until the middle of this year,” according to the ministry’s data. They went on to say that, not only has it caused financial loss but also, “losses of life, including 235 martyrs, 46 injured and 112 kidnapped.”
A video has also been released showing a massive US military convoy illegally transporting the oil from Raqqah into Iraq. The aerial footage was taken by a Russian helicopter and posted on social media.
Syrian officials have stated that, in July alone, the United States smuggled 200 tanker trucks filled with stolen oil.
Officials from the United States have not yet commented on the allegations.
